United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today welcomed the support of Linkin Park for his “Sustainable Energy for All Initiative”.

The band will utilize its extensive social media presence, including more than 36 million Facebook fans, and draw on its significant public profile to mobilize support for the Secretary-General’s Initiative and sustainable energy projects worldwide.

“Sustainable energy is about bringing greater opportunity to all people while protecting our planet, our common home,” said the Secretary-General. “The public’s support in this effort is crucial. Linkin Park can help us mobilize new audiences around the world, particularly young people, who are our future,” he said in welcoming the band to United Nations Headquarters.

Linkin Park began working with the UN in support of relief efforts in Haiti after the devastating earthquake in January 2010.  The band’s first project on behalf of the Secretary-General’s Sustainable Energy for All Initiative will continue to support the people of Haiti through the  Haiti Regeneration Initiative (HRI), a project of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

“It is our pleasure to support this effort by the UN and the Secretary-General,” said Mike Shinoda, co-lead vocalist of Linkin Park.  “We look forward to working with our fans worldwide to support sustainable energy projects that are critical to saving lives, improving livelihoods, and protecting the environment.”

The Secretary-General has set three inter-linked objectives to support the goal of achieving Sustainable Energy for All by 2030.  His objectives are:

• Ensuring universal access to modern energy services.
• Doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency.
• Doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

The UN General Assembly last year unanimously endorsed a resolution designating 2012 as “The International Year of Sustainable Energy for all”.  The Secretary-General’s Initiative marks a major contribution to the Year by mobilizing action from a broad range of stakeholders.
